Grandview Cemetery Tour @ Grandview Cemetery

Organized in 1902, Grandview Cemetery was meant to be a quiet, beautiful resting place. Over one hundred years later Grandview is the final resting place of 4,600+ people and the stories to be shared are endless. Come learn more about this cemetery and some of the early Tippecanoe County residents buried there.

This program is a partnership with The West Lafayette Public Library.

Show & Tell: Purdue’s First Graduate @ The History Center

Purdue University held its first classes in 1874 with a class of thirty- nine students, including John Bradford Harper. He was a very active student and graduated with a degree in chemistry. Yet, he became a civil engineer. Learn the story of Purdue’s first graduate, 150 years ago!

Early Architects & Builders in the Wabash Valley 1825- 1860 @ The History Center

The Wabash Valley saw rapid growth between the 1820s and 1860 as residents flooded west from Eastern states and Europe. Growth brought an influx of carpenters, builders, and architects to meet the demand for new buildings. This presentation will tell the story of early architects and builders who practiced in Fountain, Warren, Tippecanoe, Carroll and Cass Counties. 

Presented by Benjamin L. Ross

Benjamin L. Ross is a a Lafayette native and has been a historic preservation specialist with RATIO architects in Indianapolis for 15 years. Ben has been entrusted with analyzing, interpreting, and planning for the future of some of the most important historic sites in the United States, including the homes of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr.

Feast of the Hunters’ Moon @ Historic Fort Ouiatenon Park

The past is yours to savor at the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon. At this historic reenactment you can recapture 18th century life at Fort Ouiatenon—the first fortified European outpost in what is now Indiana.

The Feast of the Hunters’ Moon is a re-creation of the annual fall gathering of the French and Native Americans which took place Fort Ouiatenon, a fur-trading outpost in the mid – 1700s. It is held annually in early autumn on the banks of the Wabash River, four miles southwest of West Lafayette, Indiana.

Thousands of participants re-enact this event creating a feast for your senses. Smell the wood smoke, hear the report of the rifles, savor authentic food and more.

Continuous, free programming is held on five stages. French and Native American music and dance, fife and drum corps performances, military drills and demonstrations, fashion shows, games and contests can be enjoyed at the 50th celebration of this event. Special hands-on activities include the children’s trade blanket, costume try-on, candle-dipping, story telling, bead bracelet making, cross-cut sawing, and axe throwing.
